Oh, man. Its been a long time coming but the amazing Addams Family pinball machine is now available in digital form. See it in action here:

I poured countless dollars into this machine in the mid-nighties. I came pretty close to buying my own machine in the early 2000s. The machine I had in mind needed some work, but the price was right at about $800. Looking today, you can’t find any Addams Family machines for under $3000. Oh well, opportunity lost I guess.

I’ve been a little bit of video games recently. Not on a console, or computer, but the Mrs’ iPad. I sneak in bits of Carmageddon (with the sound off, naughty language) when I need to blow off stress. Running over helpless pedestrians is a great mood booster.

Oh yeah, MacHeist came with some Steam games in the bundle. Unfortunately, Bejeweled 3 was one of them. Home productivity surrenders. Its an incredibly simple matching game, but very addictive.

Nothing beats a 3d racing game where you have three ways to win:

Beat all the opponent cars. Nothing special here.
Destroy all the opponent cars. Crash ’em, smash ’em, push ’em off cliffs, push them into land mines.
Kill all pedestrians. Yep, give up racing completely and just run people over.

Yep, that’s Carmageddon, the ‘Racing Game for the Chemically Imbalanced’ in a nutshell. I’ve been a fan since version 1.0. The newer editions are fun, but the I think the original is still the best. I could play all day, everyday.

Ah, harkening back to the days of my youth, I remember the Nintendo Entertainment System had a ton of cool alternative controllers like the PowerPad (kinda the grand daddy of the Dance Dance Revolution), the PowerGlove, and the funky Uforce (infrared motion detectors). I thought some of the controller ideas were kinda neat, but they never really had great game support in my opinion.

I got wind of TrackMania Sunrise via a recent CNet update. Its basically a 2005 version of the game Stunts (that’s the only Stunts related page I could dig up in a quick Google search) we though was all the rage back in 1993. I thought the graphics were too good to be true (see these screen shots), so I was tempted enough to suffer through the 209Mb download. The original Stunts fit on half a floppy!

Interesting article on NYT, Remember When You Wanted Your Own Ms. Pac-man? on the growing popularity of owning your own arcade games. I’d still love to have a decent condition 80’s style game, but with both space and funds lacking at the moment, plans are on hold for now. MAME, gives you some of the flavor of the original games, but they’re just not the same without the standup cabinet and trusty mushroom joystick.

This crafty fellow put together his own Sony Playstation 2 portable using the guts of a one of the new low profile PS2 consoles, a PSONE LCD screen, and portable DVD player battery. It also has one major perk over the real Playstation Portable (coming soon from Sony), in that it plays PS2 software; the PSP will have its own new software. I could imagine all the extra Ratchet & Clank playtime I’d log if I had one of these. Very slick. I only wish I had the time to mess around with kind of stuff.

Doom 3 Speed Up

After trying Doom 3 on my new Dell, with an almost twice as fast CPU (2.8Ghz), 25% more memory (1Gb), and a fresh Windows XP install, I was pretty disappointed with the performance. It was playable, unlike my old PC, 1.5Ghz and 768Mb of RAM, but still very choppy at the lowest resolution and graphics quality settings.

My new Dell Dimension 4600 (2.8Ghz P4) desktop showed up yesterday. Picking up the shipping box, I was pleasantly surprised that the case is much lighter (a bonus when I need to shlep it from my office to the car, two blocks away.) Unfortunately, upon opening the box I was disappointed to see a regular style case, as opposed to the slick tool free cases that I’ve become used to from Dell. Guess its not too big a deal, since I don’t open up my case all that often.
