Ironically, my external internet connection, is faster (>50MB/s) at downloading than me copying the same files to my local NAS after they’ve arrived.

The last time I needed to mass convert some music files was about 10 years ago when moving some bootlegs off of optical media onto a network drive. Ripping a CDs worth of lossless SHN files to WAV took a few minutes; then re-encoding the same to FLAC took another few minutes.

I was considering replacing my aged computer speakers. So I went to amazon and searched for Computer Speakers and sorted by rating. The first hit in the list turns out to be folks selling the speakers that I was looking to replace used. Pretty skeptical that folks will pay $100 or more for 15 year old speakers that were only $75 new.

I used to keep all my music on my mac, but after downsizing to a smaller (but zillion times faster) SSD drive, I can’t seem to jam everything in any more. So, I’ve been using a portable 500Gb USB drive to keep my music. Gets the job done, but even though its small, its hassle to haul around.

Regrettably, I was not able to make it one of Roger Waters’ recent modern The Wall shows. But, decent boots and youtube videos fill in the gap nicely.

The one part I’m a little surprised that they’ll let him get away with is a pretty realistic simulation of machine gun fire at the end of The Thin Ice. You can check it out here (cued up near the interesting part.) To those uninitiated with The Wall, it might be kind of shocking.

Two albums in high rotation this week:

Gurrumul - Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. I picked up Wiyathul as the Starbucks iTunes free pick of the week a few weeks ago. Most of these freebies are pretty lame, but this one was strikingly good. Gurrumul is a little hard to describe, but here goes; I think he sounds like Robert Bradley crossed with Jack Johnson, with a little extra Iz on the side. Laid back, but powerful at the same time.
Brothers - The Black Keys. I’ve been listening to the Black Keys for a while based on a recommendation from a buddy and hearing a bunch about them on the NPR. Their last few albums were pretty catchy, the but Brothers really knocks it out of the park. Solid rock and roll power and heavy voiced lyrics to match.

A while back (years ago, in fact) I stumbled on Hayseed Dixie (probably via KPIG, the home of all things good.) They’re a bluegrass band that covers all sorts of rock music, including AC/DC (their namesake), KISS, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and many others. Good stuff!

Via digg, here’s a list of 20,000 free music videos on youtube. I’ll take their word for it on the 20,000 part, I didn’t count. A bunch of good stuff: bruce, pink floyd, dmb, ben folds, johnny cash, you name it. Ran into a few that say “No Longer Available” when you try to play them, but most seem to work fine. Geez, I was planning on being productive today, guess that’s down the tubes.

Fark had a pointer to this article, where they have some the same of old story about the popularity of Dark Side of the Moon. The newsworthy bits are a new upcoming book, The Dark Side of the Moon: The Making of the Pink Floyd Masterpiece and some random facts like the album’s was almost released with the title Eclipse, due to the fact that another band had already released an album with the Dark Side… name. Equally interesting is that the album is popular enough to warrant its own CD-pressing facility!

Caught a great interview and in studio performance of Ray LaMontange on NPR this morning. I’ve enjoyed his special brand of vocal since I saw as a Dave Matthews Band opener a few years ago. I highly recommend his first album, Trouble. His second album, Till the Sun Turns Black, due out next week looks to be very good also. Looking forward to it.

I knew that Nick Mason of Pink Floyd fame was into cars, but I didn’t know he was doing new car reviews. Here’s an entertaining article (via NYT DriveTimes) where he reviews a Nissan Micra C+C (not available in the US and probably never will be). He waxes a bit into Pink Floyd history (with the requisite plug for his book, Inside Out) before coming to the final verdict for the Nissan as “Perfect for the gay parade.”

While checking the link for the official Pink Floyd site for the last article, I stumbled on two news items:

Syd Barrett.
I hadn’t heard that founding member Syd Barrett recently passed away. The site says “The band are naturally very upset and sad to learn of his death. Syd was the guiding light of the early band line-up and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire.” The site lists no further details at the moment. Its a sad day for rock and roll.

BigScreenConcerts: David Gilmour

Hmm, I’d say it was about 75% suck, unfortunately. Turns out that BigScreenConcerts are just crappy concert DVDs, shown in 4x3 with a digital projector. If this was supposed high def digital film distribution, they’ve got a long way to go; a lot of pixelation, some motion distortion (watch the drum sticks), and lots of blooming out. The ad for the show said it was 5.1 audio, but I’m a little skeptical. Kinda scratchy and not much going on in the effects channels. Probably loud enough for most folks, but I would have liked a touch louder myself.

Tom Petty: The Highway Companions Club

Tom Petty is doing a fan club type thing called The Highway Companions Club. Sounds very similar to Dave Matthews Band’s Warehouse. Supposedly gets you better seats, but no guarantees; probably extra true since they’re teamed up directly with TicketBastard for a promotion. I think I’ll keep that $30, thank you very much.

Turn CDs into an iPod?

A while back, I was on Gizmodo and found a company that was offering to trade used CDs for an iPod. Too good to be true? Millennium Music has their exchange rates posted for CDs to a number of iPod models (or you can just cash out if you want.) Basically, you package up your discs, mail ’em off to these guys. They evaluate them on quality of title and the physical quality of the disc.

A Salute to DMB

You may have heard that Dave Matthews Band recently did an extra night their Red Rocks tour finale as a benefit for the Katrina hurricane. Reuters reports what you may not have heard, was that everybody involved donated their time; the band, security, venue, and vendors. Amazing that raised $1.5 million in a single night. That’s quite the testament to the band (who already is very charity/community conscious) and their fans.

Thankfully, my iPod MINI still works great. But, Apple is no longer selling them. Its replacement is the iPod Nano. pretty spicy, 2gb or 4gb flash (and 8gb rumored to be coming soon), color screen, and not too expensive. Available now.

I almost passed on Dave Matthews Band concerts this year. Since Ticketbastard has made it just about impossible to get good seats (with their no camping policies, inept clerks in person, and an inept website), its just not worth the money or hassle. Dave Matthews’ Warehouse fan club doesn’t help either (tickets cost even more after shipping and there’s no guarantee you’ll even get seats, let alone good ones.) My theory for this concert was I’ll roll the dice with ticketmaster and see what I could get. I lucked out and scored a couple of seats in section 203 (which turned out to be closer than I thought; bonus!) So, the plans were laid out for my 13th Dave Matthews Concert.

Via Fark, femalefirst.co.uk reports that Pink Floyd has turned down offers of up to 150M Pounds (aka $262M ) to tour the US. Nutz.

Between MTV and aolmusic.com, I got to see Pink Floyd’s performance at Live8. Breathe, Money, Wish You Were Here, and Comfortably Numb. Freaking amazing.

Even thought its been 24 years since the last time they all played together, you’d hardly notice. They were very tight and all in very good spirits. I was quite moved. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a reunion tour is in the works. If so, I’ll make this tour, whatever it takes. I’ve got 11 years of regret for missing them last time through.

A while back, I stumbled on Apocalyptica. 3 words: heavy, metal, cello. Doesn’t get much harder than that.

They’re probably most known for their Apocalyptica Plays Metallica album. I thought it was pretty good, but then I found some of their original material, which is even better. I’ve been enjoying them frequently on my iPod while running and at work (both at very high volume, hehe.) Motivational, inspirational. Definitely worth checking out.

Spotted a plug for Blue Floyd in a the pinkfloyd2 group at Yahoo. Their sample cuts sounded pretty interesting, almost like cross between Pink Floyd and Phish. They were in the Syracuse area a few weekends back; unfortunately, I couldn’t talk anybody in going to the show.

The Dave Matthews Band put up a new site to promote their next album. Not much to see other than a decent video that has some sound bites from all the band members. The teaser bits of new songs in the video sound interesting. The band has switched to another pop producer (Mark Batson), I hope they have better results than with their Everyday album. Stay tuned…

Here are some awesome (both in terms of beauty and expense) prints of Pink Floyd artwork at RockOptic (like the name!)

On their site they also have some background stuff on the artist who does Pink Floyd’s memorable album covers, Storm Thorgerson. A new random factoid for me was he also did the Peter Gabriel’s melty face album cover. The effect was done by smooshing a polaroid photo as it was developing. Way cool!

Festerhead Radio

Stumbled on the Festerhead online radio station this morning. Was looking for some good Hawaiian music (missing Maui, sniff…) Usually I tune into Hawaiian 105, which I listened to alot when tooling around Maui. But some reason their crappy streaming applet cuts out continually on my internet connection at work (but works fine from Road Runner at home…)

Caught the execellent Pink Floyd tribute band, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, last night. They’re pretty good. They rambled straight through all of Dark Side of the Moon, a few selections from Wish You Were Here, Fletcher Memorial Home (from the less popular Final Cut album), a very energetic Careful with That Axe, Eugene (complete with 20 foot high inflatable kangaroo), Sorrow (with an interesting substitution of varilight effects in stead of the real band’s trademark lasers), and wrapped things up with Comfortably Numb and a 4 foot disco ball.

John Mayer / Maroon 5 Concert

Saw a John Mayer / Maroon 5 / dj Logic show Tuesday night at Darien Lake.

The show was great. We missed most of the dj logic show due to late arrival. Not really my kind of music anyway, so no tears shed. Maroon 5 was very entertaining and did a good job getting the crowd revved up. They basically played their whole album (I guess that’s what you do when you have only one album).
