One Pot Dirty Cabbage

recipefood

Saw this in a YouTube short and it looked good enough to try.

Ingredients

  • 1 small head of green cabbage
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 ring kielbasa
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp mince garlic
  • 1 tbsp of Nature’s Seasonings

Method

  1. Core the cabbage, cut into 1/2" strips. Rinse cut cabbage in a strainer.
  2. Rough chop red pepper and onions.
  3. Cut kielbasa on the bias.
  4. Add kielbasa to large frying pan over medium high heat.
  5. As kielbasa begins to brown, move to side of pan and add hamburger to opposite side. Leave hamburger to brown in block. Then flip and break up.
  6. Add tomato paste, cook for a few minutes.
  7. Add flour and mix to incorporate. Cook for 1 minute.
  8. Add onions, red pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Reduce heat to medium.
  9. Add garlic. Mix to fully incorporate.
  10. Add cabbage, reduce to medium-low. Cook for 20 minutes mixing a few times.

Notes

  • It was pretty good, but need more seasoning. Next I make it, I’ll add salt and pepper layer by layer instead of counting on the single hit of Nature’s Seasonings just at the end.
  • I might also cut the Worcestershire sauce down a bit; it was the dominating flavor, but that might have just been the lack of seasonings otherwise.
  • The original recipe used turkey kielbasa, I used Polska and it was fine.
  • In the video, it looked like they used a whole head of cabbage. I used my biggest frying pan and only was able to fit 1/2 to 3/4 of the smaller cabbage I found.
